Elbow Dysplasia

Conservative Management

Early phase

  • Pain reduction - cryotherapy if required, PEMFT
  • Improve elbow range of motion - PROM and laser therapy
  • Muscle maintenance - gentle posturing exercise such as square stands and weight shifting

Progression

  • Controlled strengthening to address atrophy - increase elbow range of motion during exercises, eg. introduce down stands
  • Functional exercise

Long-term

Slow progression of osteoarthritis whilst maintaining quality of life.

Equipment

Equipment required: LASER, PEMFT, cryotherapy, remedial exercise

Case Studies

Myr, Finlay, Lincoln

Arthroscopy

Weeks 0–2

  • Reduce swelling - cryotherapy
  • Encourage early limb loading - square stands, weight shifting
  • Maintain joint mobility - passive range of motion exercise

Weeks 2–6

  • Improve limb loading
  • Progressive strengthening to address atrophy

Weeks 6–12

  • Functional strengthening - down stands if appropriate, unstable surface work
  • Aim for return to normal activity by 12 weeks post op

Long-term monitoring for osteoarthritis remains important. Maintaining joint ROM is crucial.
